Welcome & Thank You!

First things first… THANK YOU for taking a moment to glance at our little corner of cyber space. We know you are very busy, so we won’t take much of your time.

We will use this platform to give periodic updates about the growth and needs of Safe Families for Children Lane County. This ministry of biblical hospitality uses volunteer families to provide safe and loving respite for children while parents navigate short term crises. We hope you will subscribe and share this blog with others who are committed to keeping kids safe in our area.

There is a role for everyone!

Whether you show love by opening your house to others, cooking, advocacy, transportation, fixing things, or just offering your time, you could be a valuable team member of Safe Families for Children. If you are interested in having SFFC present at your church in Lane County, please let us know. AngelaA@CAFAweb.com or (541) 349-2870

We covet your prayers, support and interaction with this program.

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world” (James 1:27).

We are Hosting!

Around the Country in the last 10+, there have been tens of thousands of families helped by Safe Families for Children. This week, we can add a family from the South Lane County area to that list. A sweet family, with 2 young boys, mom is in the hospital after delivering a baby and dad needs to go back to work.

What a gift to be able to offer this family a little support. A trained host family is loving on these little boys, while Mom gives her attention to the new baby. The host family is also being supported as they have added two more mouths to feed. When mom and new baby come home, there will be continued support for their family, meals, and other resources as needed.

Families from 3 different churches, each offering a little something. This is it!!! A wonderful example of the body of Christ, the Church of South Lane County, stepping up to love on children and families!

…And this is only the beginning!

Perfect Timing!

A single mom who desperately needs surgery but has no where for her twin toddlers.  A couple navigating a mental health emergency who needs a safe place for their baby.  Lane County families willing to open their homes for kids who need a temporary home.

We are grateful for the volunteers and participating churches in Cottage Grove who are showing biblical hospitality to these families.

If you are part of a faith community in Lane County that you think would be receptive to joining the Safe Families movement, please contact SFFC Director, Angela Ard: AngelaA@cafaweb.com

How It Works

Plenty to be thankful for!

We are fast approaching the holiday season which means shopping, decorating, parties, baking, gift wrapping, snow (wishful thinking) and family time.  It is by far my favorite time of the year, but before I get swept away, I wanted to pause for one minute and direct our attention to that other holiday. You know, the one that comes before Christmas….

That’s right, Thanksgiving! And although I do love turkey and stuffing, I want to focus on a few things I’m thankful for.

First, I’m thankful for open doors. In only the last 2 months, we have graciously been invited into 7 different churches from different denominations in South Lane County! Seven!!!! The pastors have been welcoming, accommodating and clearly passionate about serving their community. What a blessing!

Second, I’m thankful for our team! Safe Families Lane County is so very lucky to have our ministry leads in Cottage Grove, David and Merlyn White. They are the feet on the ground, making connections, spreading the word, and they have a true heart for this ministry.

Third, I’m thankful for faithful volunteers and their willingness to serve. In the last few months, we have received volunteer interest cards from over 60 families! And just two weeks ago, we held an information night for prospective host families with over 20 people in attendance! I’m blown away by these families, their faith, and their eagerness to share God’s love with their community.

6 months ago, I never would have imagined God’s amazing plan for Safe Families in Lane County. I’m just so very grateful to be a part of it!!

The Calls Are Coming In!

In the last couple of months (without advertising or officially launching) we’ve received a number of calls about children in need of temporary care.  On one hand, it is heart breaking to not be able to help since our host families are still in the training process, and on the other hand it confirms that SFFC is needed in Lane County!

Here is a snap shot of the children who need SFFC Lane County:

  • A rural family about to lose their home.  Tensions in the family are high and an 8 year old boy needs a safe place while his parents sort out a few things.
  • A single mom needs care for her 4 children (ages 1-7) while she has a medical procedure.
  • A homeless family needs a safe home for their teen child.
  • A single dad looking for a new job needs care for a three year old.
  • A teen mom needs a safe family for her infant while she looks for stable housing and work.
  • A teen needs a place to call home while his mom is ill.

  • Volunteer to host a child!
  • Volunteer to support a host family
  • Request a presentation for your home group, bible study, congregation, etc.
  • Join our Advisory Board!
  • Spread the word!

Getting Rolling in Cottage Grove!

With the guidance and influence of pastors and community leaders in Cottage Grove, we were invited to present at two congregations over the past month and are scheduled to talk with four more congregations soon.  These initial presentations resulted in 9 families saying they were interested in hosting children and 15-20 others who are willing serve in a support role. We are so encouraged by the network of support being built in this community.

Praise God!

Informational meetings and trainings are scheduled for Cottage Grove over the coming weeks.  If enthusiasm and commitments continue at this rate, we hope to able to accept referrals for at risk children as soon at January 2016!

Please Pray:

  • For church leaders as they guide their congregations toward biblical hospitality.
  • For guidance for SFFC staff as they present to new congregations.
  • For the current and potential volunteers to be moved to serve in places God has prepared for them.
